Club Meeting Minutes*
May 11, 2006

Attendance:
JennyLyn Little, Martin Gray, Ned Searle, Wayne Bahr, Quinton DeMann, Joelle Rasmussen, Wendy Kelly, Kelly Moller, Tim Cosgrove, Paul Hezseltine, Alan DeMann, Alvaro Omiste, Angie Wilde, Michele Schafer, Wendi Larsen, Marianne Allred, T.Orden Yost, David R. Moyes, Jeff Wilkinson, Brad Evans, Brian DeMann, Natalie Gochner, Regan Jones, and Connie Mooy.

Review and acceptance of minutes – Tim Cosgrove
The minutes were reviewed, Kelly Moller motioned to accept the minutes and Orden Yost seconded the motion. The minutes were accepted and approved by the board.

Special Request - Jordan DeMann
Jordan presented a new design for the goals. The designs does not have the two center back supports, it has some stiffeners. He recommended to the board that the club needs 2 or 3 sets, 4-6 portable goals. Or, 4 sets, 8 goals, of the metal goals that are less portable. The metal goals would need to be chained to a fence or secured in some way at the fields to avoid the set up time at each game. Sleeves would need to be placed in the fields for the stationary metal goals, or a    have a “T” post; this would be higher in cost than the sleeves. The goals are 6’x8’ which is regulation. The new design has been used successfully at a couple of the U9 games. He has not met with Parks & Rec but, they can be sized down for them. Parks & Rec would need more, smaller goals than the club. Tim Cosgrove requested they be tried with a couple more teams either in practice or games. Mogie offered to have the U-10 girls use them at their Tuesday practice. The cost for the materials would be $175-$200 per set and would take approximately 1 hour to build. Turn around time for delivery could be within one week. Orden Yost moved that the club get 2 sets to cover 2 teams, pay for materials and reimburse for materials already purchased. Kelly Moller seconded and the board approved the motion.

The set up would require ‘two husky boys’. Suggestion was made they be used for try outs. Jordan will come and them up for use at the Friday and Saturday U-9 girls games. Alan DeMann pointed out that in the long run, the metal design with sleeves is best for us and for Parks & Rec as something a bit more permanent.

UYSA Deputy Director Report – Orden Yost
Orden surprised the group by saying he “had nothing”. We have had a request from UYSA for Murray Max to sponsor a coaching license course June 12, 14, 16 & 17. We would need to secure a field location, with an indoor classroom and have indoor back up. Kelly Moller said he would work on it.

Director of Coaches report - Kelly Moller and Mogie DeMann,
Try Outs – Coaches need to present a meeting with the parents prior to try outs or in conjunction with them. The tools for meeting are in the club manual. Orden will send them to Jeff Wilkinson to put on the website. Prior to try outs it needs to be explained to parents the club and the coach’s philosophy and expectation so they know what they are buying into. We can still allow parents and kids some leeway on which team to play on. They should receive a bio-resume of the coach. It is vital that parents understand we are a volunteer club and we must have commitment.

Orden Yost suggested that a handout be created for the parents with detailed standards in relation to the club, specifically stating what coaches do, etc. The kids need a ‘packet’ to take home and have the parents sign and return. Tim Cosgrove agrees, as does the board and we are headed in that direction.

Joelle Rasmussen clarified that with the resume of the coach, can parents request a coach. There will be some leeway as to which team kids and parents prefer.

It was mentioned that Jodi Cheever and Fabian Zullo both have nice copies of a parent note they had been passing around at one time for approval.

It was decided that the VP of Boys and the VP of girls are over the team managers and should come up with a simple, 1 page, and guidelines for parents at try outs.

Orden Yost came with boxes of try out flyers to be given out for delivery to schools and Parks & Rec. Ned Ostler will take a copy of the try out flyer to Granite and Murray School Districts for approval. Parks & Rec will pass the flyers out on Saturday.

Orden will add to future printings and Jeff Wilkinson will add to the website the following additional try outs: Boys U-13 and U-9. Steve and Carla Christensen will coach the boys U-9.

There is a ‘lead’ on a coach for the girls U-9 but nothing is settled.

The location of all the banners for try outs is in question. Kelly Moller has 2 and Tim and Orden each should have one.

Wayne Bahr requested specific notation in the minutes regarding registration. This year there is no ‘wiggle’ room on the real dead line. He has already pushed it back as far as possible. Registration is due to him, at his house, June 19th or June 20th between the hours of 6:00p.m. and 10:00p.m. absolutely no exceptions. No individual team can go to Maureen with add-ons without a receipt from Wayne for completed registration of the team. Alan DeMann pointed out that the U-9 teams holding try outs at the end of May first of June will need to be prepared to accommodate the possible large turn out. Team selection and registration will be difficult for them in the time frame. Wayne distributed registration packets to the team reps/coaches. Uniform purchasing will need to be paid by the team at the time of purchase, no credits will be given.

Trainings, Camps and Tournaments –
BK training dates and times with teams will be given to the coaches.

MLS-camps are the week of June 26-30 at Willow Pond Park. Registration can be done on line for a $4 fee or through Parks and Rec.

Real’ SL elite training, which is great for serious, motivated kids, June 12-29 $465 for an hour and a half 3 times a week, at the Murray Ice Rink Fields. It is noted that the cost is comparable to UofU or BYU camps. Players from the same team can be kept together to develop team skills.

Saturday, May 20, is the Murray Max Night with Real’ SL, it is theU-9 & U-10 and Parks & Rec. players ticket night. Tickets for other Real’ games can be obtained from Kelly Moller. He requested that all unused tickets be turned in for him to exchange for other teams to use.

TOSH – Russ Dow (absent)
Mogie DeMann’s teams and Orden Yost’s team have gone as well as other players on an individual basis. Many positive comments were shared regarding experiences with TOSH.

MMAX Soccer Tournament -
There is still question on tournaments. The U-9 and U-10 have a tournament the first week of August.

Parent Survey – Connie Mooy
The parent survey will be emailed to all email addresses the club has, as well as the coaches. Coaches are asked to copy the survey and distribute it to their team parents and ask them to return them to Tim Cosgrove or Connie Mooy. Information of where to send the survey will be on the survey. The survey will be in a format that can be filled out on line and sent through email.

Recommendation subcommittee – Alan DeMann
Alan DeMann presented two packets to the board. One packet was a summary of the recommendation committee’s findings and suggestions. The other was a proposal presenting an opportunity for the Murray High School coaches from Gustavo Cabrera. Alan noted that despite invitations for others to be involved, generally the meetings consisted of coaches in attendance. Therefore, the information has a bias of coaches. See the handout packets for most of the information presented. The club strengths and weaknesses were identified, some of which were the same. The common vision for the club presented wide complication and needs more on administration. The committee tabled the issue and has handed it off back to the club. In regards to the development of coaches, we have the best, dedicated coaches in the state, “bar none”. Many of the older coaches still feel they are far from what they should know, etc. Many younger coaches that have had a lot of experience and have played are bringing a lot to the club.

For example, the U-9 teams are doing things the high schoolers struggle with. A coach’s plan that is written and turned into the club is recommended. MHS needs to define what it wants. Our club has the opportunity to pilot a program, discussed later. Our Parks & Rec. program is far behind others, i.e. Midvale and Sandy City.

The high school coaches have been presented with an opportunity for a pilot project as a result of a parent that has a connection with Real’ SL. They are asking for a change, a paradigm shift, with the understanding that there are emotional ties that will be affected. The pilot, based on a proposal presented by Gustavo would involve him becoming the ‘head’ coach for the high school team for fall season. The coaches have already paid him to take the last 4-5 practices and games of this season run them. There was great deal of discussion concerning this proposal. Question were posed as to exactly how this plan fits within the bylaws of the club, how and where the players fit in if age groups and abilities were combined, how this will help the coaches and enhance the quality of coaching of the clubs other teams and whether he is ‘the best’ person to do this for our club, etc. The three MHS teams have decided they want to pursue doing the pilot and the cost of having him coach will be paid by the boys. It was noted that boys would not be excluded for lack of ability to pay. Connie Mooy asked if the club training money could be used toward this effort. The fee exceeds the allowed amount that can be paid for training. We are a volunteer, unpaid coaches, club. Is this a direction we want to be going in is in question. There was also discussion on how to provide the same opportunity for the other teams, and how young to start, etc. Natalie Gochner brought up the issue of having the same opportunity for the girl’s teams. She was asked by Tim to give her opinion/insight on the matter in question. Natalie pointed out that it needed to be principle based. She mentioned specifically limiting it to a pilot, user pay, gender bias, an accountability measure, strategic in age group and be broad based-coach skill filtered down through the club.

Tim Cosgrove, club president, expressed frustration with the dynamics and timing without sufficient discussion and time to evaluate the proposal.

Ned Searle motioned that the club go ahead and ratify the pilot program proposal with Gustavo Cabrera as the trainer and that Alan DeMann comes back to the club with a proposal reflecting the items Natalie identified and look at other people to be involved and coach the girls. Ned Ostler seconded the motion. Discussion included Brian DeMann that the volunteering has an affect on the volunteers, somewhat as a ‘daycare’. This gives the opportunity to improve and be more productive as volunteer. Especially if all or any of the coaches could go and watch what he does and have it filter into the club. The motion was accepted by the board.
